As we announced on April 3,2020 we officially received word that the 2020 Spring football and cheerleading season had been cancelled due to the Coronavirus pandemic – COVID-19 effective immediately and that the Hanover Warriors Youth Football and Cheerleading would issue a more detailed email on Sunday, April 5,2020.
As the Hanover Warriors approached the 2020 season we did it like we do every season. We always
budget for the season and determine what we need to buy for the year. This year we determined that we wanted to start a cheerleading program, buy and loan out helmets and shoulder pads to younger players plus those in need, and replace the game pants which we had used for 5 years. In addition you have the usual expenses of new footballs, helmet decals, replacing jerseys, mouthpieces, chinstraps, coaches shirts, etc. Also, we have to pay the league a registration fee, per player costs, buy team rep shirts, and fines for any coaches that could not make the coaches clinic. All of this has to be done before the season starts and finished by the end of the first week of practice in order to be here in time. Cheerleading uniforms and jerseys have a lead time of 6 weeks and pants sell out and have to be ordered early too.
After paying for all of these items, we still have to have enough remaining after the season starts to pay for the fields, buy trophies, pay for spray paint for the fields, etc. We also have to pay for somebody to do the scoreboard and announce at most of our games as we almost never get anybody to volunteer. After all of this, we ended up the season last year with a few hundred dollars in the bank. We are a 501C3 Non-profit and reinvest everything back into the program for the kids. This is how we have done it every year and have the records to prove it.
We usually project a little money to be brought in from our fundraising. As of right now we have not received the money from our first fundraising event.
The Coronavirus – or Covid 19 has changed everything. It is something that nobody could have planned for. Did you know that the first case in Virginia was not until March 7th ?(we started on Feb 29th)? It has just skyrocketed in less than a month and has caused the league, the county, state, and federal government to shut us down. Never in our countries history have all sports everywhere been shutdown by our elected officials after they have already started the season. Well after all of this- here is what we have done or are going to do to try to remedy the situation and lessen the impact. Please see below –
1. If you have ordered items on the 2020 spring spirit shop from BSN
All of those items have been cancelled, were not ordered and will not be delivered. Your credit card should have been credited.
2. We are going to return as much of the money from our bank account as possible taking our balance to nearly zero.
Cheerleaders plus 10U / 12U / and 13U football players - We are going to try to return $50 to every player that has paid and offer a $75 credit for next year.
14U players and 14U cheerleader – we are going to try to return $100 dollars to every player that has paid.
Payment will be by check for our records. We can not return money by PayPal. On Saturday, April 5,2020 the league says they issued a refund to us that will take 3-5 business days. They, will be deducting from our total the team registration fee, team rep shirt costs, and insurance which can not be returned. They will be returning the player fees that were to cover mostly game referees.
We will start writing refund checks after we get the league refund hopefully on Easter weekend and start mailing them out.
3. DMV Cards
Since the State does not allow any groups to meet and because of social distancing rules we will return the DMV cards by mail along with the checks if you do not have any Hanover Warrior Equipment (shoulder pads or helmets) to be returned.
4. For those that have some of our equipment or cheerleaders that have items to be picked up
We will have to wait until Pole Green Park is available and setup a time to exchange. -Time to be determined.
5. We will attempt to field a 13U or 14U team (which is 13-14, age as of 7/31/2020) in the fall. We need enough 14U players to go the 14U route. If you were on the 12U team and are aging up, or 13U and 14U and still age eligible please email and let me know you are interested and we will add you to the list. If you choose this, you can play the fall season for free and will not receive a refund or discount next season. The head coach will be Jim Rice and the assistants will be JJ Thompson, Josh Rice, and Austin Rice.
We will notify the Blue Star Cowboys and the Mechanicsville Rebels on this. We only will be fielding older than 12U since we will not interfere with the other Hanover County teams that offer 6U-12U. We might be able to use the E2E insurance money for 14U that was non-refundable if we use it in the same calendar year. The league has not confirmed that yet.
Best regards,
Terry Malick
